Privacy Policy

Last updated: · Aligned to India's DPDP Act, 2023
Draft: not yet reviewed by a lawyer. This document describes how Lissn is actually built and intended to operate, so it is a realistic starting point rather than boilerplate. It still must be reviewed and finalised by qualified counsel, and every [SQUARE BRACKET] placeholder filled in with the real operating-entity details, before Lissn is offered to the public.

Lissn holds what is probably the most sensitive category of data there is: what someone said during a hard moment. We collect as little as we can get away with, and we never sell it.

1. What we collect

1a. Notifications

A notification never contains what anyone said to you. A message notification says a message arrived and nothing more, because a lock screen is visible to whoever is holding the phone — including someone you may not want reading it. The words are only ever in the app, behind your sign-in.

You can choose which kinds we send from Profile → Notifications: sessions, messages, money, and news from us. News is off unless you ask for it. Turning a category off stops it everywhere, on every device.

When you sign out, that device stops receiving notifications immediately — your other devices are unaffected. If you delete the app, the notification service tells us the device is gone and we stop sending to it.

2. What we don't do

3. Why we hold it

To run the service (match you with Buddies, carry the conversation, process payment), to keep it safe (contact-info redaction, crisis detection, moderating reported content), and to meet legal obligations. Nothing else.

4. Safety screening

Messages are automatically screened for signals of self-harm or abuse, and for contact details being shared. When something is flagged, the Seeker is shown crisis helplines and the Buddy is given guidance; flagged content may be reviewed by a human on the safety team. This is the one place where we deliberately read content, and it exists because the alternative, nobody noticing, is worse. Lissn is peer support, not a crisis service: see Safety & crisis help.

5. Who else sees it

6. Your rights under the DPDP Act, 2023

7. How long we keep things

On deletion we anonymise rather than hard-delete, and we'd rather explain that honestly than claim an erasure that isn't true. Your identifiers are removed; records that are also another person's record, such as a Buddy's earnings history or a safety report filed about behaviour, are retained detached from your identity. The reasoning and the full list are on the account deletion page.

Beyond that, we keep data only as long as it's needed to operate the service or as the law requires, and purge or anonymise past that point.

An ID photo is encrypted while we hold it and deleted when it has been reviewed, when you delete your account, or if it was uploaded and never submitted, whichever comes first.

Device tokens are removed when you sign out of that device, and retired automatically when the notification service tells us the app has been uninstalled. We keep a record that a device existed and when it stopped, so we can answer "why did my notifications stop" — that record has no token in it.

The copy on your phone is not ours to keep. It is cleared when you sign out, and removed with the app if you uninstall it.

8. Security

8a. Screenshots of your conversation

We try to stop conversations being captured, and we will not pretend that we can always succeed. Here is exactly where it stands, because a promise we cannot keep is worse than an honest description.

So if the other person captures the screen, we tell you. You will see a notice in the conversation. You can end the session at any moment and report it afterwards. We record that a capture happened — the time, the session, and which side did it — so a pattern can be reviewed. We never see the image itself; it is on their device, not ours.

9. Children

Lissn is for adults, 18 and over. We don't knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has created an account, tell us at privacy@lissnapp.com and we'll remove it.

10. Changes

We'll notify material changes in the app before they take effect.
